Team Structure

While our fifth grade students are assigned to a homeroom with other students, they have the opportunity to learn and grow with all three of our fifth grade teachers this year. Each student meets with his or her homeroom teacher and class at the beginning and end of each school day. Throughout the week each student receives core instruction from all three teachers in the morning. Currently, Mrs. Kerr is teaching math, Ms. Konstan is teaching reading, and Mrs. Schaaf is teaching science & social studies. Explicit writing instruction takes place with all three homeroom teachers.

In reading, our fifth grade students continue to build their fluency to support their understanding and comprehension. In addition, they work to support their understanding of a variety of texts with specific & key details and structures.

Over the course of the school year, our fifth grade students build on their previous experience as they explore narrative, information, and opinion writing. As fifth grade students, they seek to write using structure (i.e. lead, transitions, ending, & organization), development (i.e. elaboration & craft), and language conventions (i.e. spelling & punctuation).

Our Eureka math modules in fifth grade explore (1) Place Value & Decimal Fractions; (2) Multi-Digit Whole Number & Decimal Fraction Operations; (3) Addition & Subtraction of Fractions; (4) Multiplication and Division of Fractions & Decimal Fractions; (5) Addition & Multiplication with Volume & Area; and (6) Problem Solving with the Coordinate Plane.

Our current fifth grade units of study in science include:

  • Electricity and Electromagnetism
  • Project Lead the Way (PLTW) - Infection: Detection
  • Project Lead the Way (PLTW) - Infection: Modeling and Simulation (optional)
  • Project Lead the Way (PLTW) - Robotics and Automation
  • Project Lead the Way (PLTW) - Robotics and Automation: Challenge

Social-Emotional & Executive Functioning

Throughout elementary school, it is our goal to build our students' capacity to show respect, to work cooperatively, to use time productively, to listen attentively, to follow directions, to organize materials & tasks, to produce quality work, to participate & contribute to their learning, to handle & resolve conflict, and to problem solve & think independently.
